Treatment of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) when iron replacement is needed.
May be used when oral iron is ineffective, poorly tolerated, or when rapid iron replacement is required.
In some adults, it is also used for iron deficiency associated with heart failure.

Blood tests should confirm iron deficiency before treatment.
Tell the doctor if you have previously had an allergy/reaction to IV iron.
Tell the doctor if you have low phosphate, vitamin-D deficiency, malabsorption problems, inflammatory bowel disease, or parathyroid problems, particularly if repeated courses are planned.
Blood pressure should be monitored after administration.
Patients should generally be observed for at least 30 minutes after the injection/infusion for allergic reactions.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
FCM should not be given to someone who has had a known serious allergy/hypersensitivity to ferric carboxymaltose or any of its ingredients.
It should also not be used simply for anemia that is not caused by iron deficiency, or when there is iron overload; these situations require medical assessment.
Important: A 500-mg FCM injection is a relatively high-dose IV iron treatment. The appropriate dose depends on the patient's weight, hemoglobin, iron studies and medical condition—it should not be given just because hemoglobin is low.
