Diclofenac Sodium Injection may be used for short-term relief of:

  • Acute musculoskeletal pain

  • Post-operative pain

  • Pain associated with arthritis or inflammatory conditions

  • Sprains, strains and soft-tissue injuries

  • Other acute painful conditions when an injectable NSAID is considered appropriate

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Stomach pain, indigestion or heartburn

  • Diarrhea or constipation

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Injection-site discomfort

These are generally less serious, but persistent or severe symptoms should be reported to a doctor.

  • Stomach/intestinal bleeding or black stools

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Chest pain, breathing difficulty or sudden weakness

  • Severe allergic reaction, facial/throat swelling or difficulty breathing

  • Reduced urine output or blood in urine

  • Severe skin rash or blistering

  • Yellowing of the eyes/skin, which may indicate liver injury

  • Significant swelling of the legs or feet

Diclofenac and other NSAIDs can increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events and gastrointestinal bleeding.

Use only after medical advice in patients with:

  • History of stomach ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding

  • Kidney or liver disease

  • Heart disease, hypertension or heart failure

  • History of heart attack or stroke

  • Asthma, particularly aspirin/NSAID-sensitive asthma

  • Dehydration or conditions that may affect kidney function

  • Older age

Diclofenac should generally not be used in people who:

  • Have a known allergy to diclofenac, aspirin or other NSAIDs

  • Have experienced asthma, hives or an allergic reaction after taking aspirin/NSAIDs

  • Have active stomach/intestinal ulcer or bleeding

  • Have serious kidney, liver or heart problems unless specifically directed by a specialist

  • Are undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery; diclofenac is contraindicated around CABG surgery.

  • Are pregnant at 30 weeks or later, unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional; NSAIDs should generally be avoided from this stage because of fetal risks.
